Barham - still ahead

England's Benn Barham went to the turn in a two-under-par 34 to maintain his lead at the Austrian Open in Vienna today.

After equalling the lowest round of his European Tour career with his opening 63, the 33-year-old from Kent, only 175th on the money list and needing to climb into the top 115 by the end of the season to keep his card, added further birdies on the 15th and 18th.

Barham stood 10 under par, while into second place came Australian left-hander Richard Green, winner of the title two years ago.

Green, who had two eagles in the last four holes of his opening 65, birdied the 15th, 16th and 18th to move to nine under, two ahead of Scotland's Scott Drummond and Australian Brett Rumford.

The biggest move of the morning was from Welshman Bradley Dredge, returning to action two weeks after he was runner-up to Swede Alex Noren at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

Dredge had work to do just to survive the halfway cut following his first-day 72, but after resuming with a bogey on the 10th he birdied two holes later and then reeled off six more in a row from the 14th.

That lifted the Ryder Cup hopeful to five under and into a tie for 10th spot after starting the day down in 75th.

He was alongside Dane Soren Hansen, the only member of the world's top 50 at the tournament.

Dredge made it seven successive birdies on the 491-yard par four second and needed one more to equal the Tour record - but instead bogeyed it.

With six to play he was tied for 11th at five under, while Barham stretched his advantage to three at 11 under when he birdied the fifth and Green bogeyed the first.
